Western India is a loosely defined region of India consisting of its western part. The Ministry of Home Affairs in its Western Zonal Council Administrative division includes the states of Goa, Gujarat, and Maharashtra along with the Union territory of Daman and Diu and Dadra and Nagar Haveli while the Ministry of Culture and some historians also include the state of Rajasthan.
Western India comprises three large states, one small state and two minuscule union territories. It is bounded by the ancient Indus Valley Plains of Pakistan and the Arabian Sea to its west and the Gangetic Plains of the country to its east. This is the most heterogeneous of India's regions. The states differ drastically from one another in language, culture and levels of economic development. Maharashtra and Gujarat are among the most industrialized states of India while Rajasthan and Goa are magnets for tourists, though for different reasons. By air is the most convenient way to enter the west. There are many international airports and Mumbai is the busiest.
